Mais nous aurions tort. Ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 nourris dans un endroit inattendu.<\/p>\n<p>Chez les Romains anciens et pa\u00efens, la compassion n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas tr\u00e8s d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e. &#8220;La mis\u00e9ricorde \u00e9tait d\u00e9courag\u00e9e, car elle n&#8217;aidait que ceux qui \u00e9taient trop faibles pour contribuer \u00e0 la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Dans l&#8217;\u00e9troitesse et l&#8217;insalubrit\u00e9 de la ville romaine typique, sous le cycle mis\u00e9rable des pestes et des famines, les malades ne trouvaient pas d&#8217;institutions publiques d\u00e9di\u00e9es \u00e0 leurs soins et peu de sympathie ou d&#8217;aide.&#8221; [<a title=\"Une nouvelle \u00e8re pour les soins de sant\u00e9 romains\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christianhistoryinstitute.org\/magazine\/article\/new-era-in-roman-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Une nouvelle \u00e8re dans les soins de sant\u00e9 romains&#8221; Gary Ferngren<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Ferngren poursuit en expliquant que si l&#8217;une des plus grandes fiert\u00e9s de Rome \u00e9tait ses villes, celles-ci constituaient \u00e9galement un terrain fertile pour les maladies, en particulier pour les migrants venus de la campagne. Il n&#8217;existait pas de cliniques ou d&#8217;h\u00f4pitaux pour dispenser des soins de sant\u00e9 ou des soins infirmiers de base. Les m\u00e9decins \u00e9taient r\u00e9serv\u00e9s aux riches. Dans un monde de dieux qui n&#8217;\u00e9taient pas connus pour leur compassion, la culture romaine n&#8217;encourageait pas \u00e0 se sentir responsable de la prise en charge des malades et des marginaux.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 les pers\u00e9cutions, au deuxi\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, des \u00e9glises chr\u00e9tiennes avaient vu le jour dans la plupart des grandes villes, et leur charit\u00e9 consistait notamment \u00e0 soigner les malades. Au quatri\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, les \u00e9v\u00eaques de la moiti\u00e9 orientale de l&#8217;empire ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des institutions chr\u00e9tiennes d&#8217;aide sociale pour les malades et les pauvres, appel\u00e9es <em>xenodocheia<\/em>.
